Re: [kbritten] UNM Can't Post

If you don't get off that wait-list take some online workshops and in person workshops (and use the ALC services) and try again. Good luck!

Re: [kbritten] UNM Can't Post

kbritten, many people who've past through here over the years did an 0-fer their first time out, then re-applied the next year and received multiple acceptances.

My first year, I was 0-4-1. One of my recommenders was kind enough to have a long talk with me. He likened MFA rejection to romantic disappointment-- and he was right. That's how much it hurt. Then he advised doing a summer conference. In my case, Sewanee. That conference really helped me refine my work. I continued writing after that and making small improvements in my work. And somehow I got luckier on my second go-around.

The key is, allow for a reasonable period of glumness. Then think about how you can become better in the next 6 or 8 months. Good luck!

Stanford, Kenyon Review and Mid-American Review all have online workshops. There are also summer things you can do… like Iowa, Breadloaf, and so on.

Best of Luck!

Re: [Katevey] UNM Can't Post

I've been in contact with some "local" schools, Central Florida and South Florida (about an hour away for me), both with MFA programs, and I found out that it is possible to apply as a non-degree seeking student and take GRADUATE level creative writing courses *pending approval of course*!!! AND, it is possible to audit those courses and not pay anything except for registration/application fees!! Awesome! This is pending approval, but for sure I'll be able to take an undergraduate fiction course over the summer online for no credit and possibly for free. Now, it's certainly no substitute for the degree itself, but it is a cheap, convenient, reliable method to better prepare for the next application season. Just thought I'd share to those who are looking for a workshop to prepare for next year - contact your local university :)

You can "do" Bread Loaf if you are admitted. Deadline for general contributors is March 19, this Friday. Application is online only.

Just got the little envelope from Irvine today. Not unexpected!

Since that was the one and only school I applied to, that's it for me. See many or most of you next year!

Re: Online Workshops Can't Post

A few other writers and myself have started up the MFA Rejects Workshop. (Okay, the name is negotiable. I wanted to own the word reject and steal its power, but whatever.) It's a group of people who applied for MFA programs this year and didn't make it. Well, actually we're open to people who did make it, too, and want to help. Our mission is to kick ass at writing to be ready for next year, with a goal of having 100% of our members accepted. We're all paying free dollars for the privilege, and the group is open to writers of all genres.

If this sounds like something you're interested in, send me a PM with your email address, and I'll send you an invitation to join.

Rejected Can't Post

I guess this thread is mostly old news at this point, but I've been too heartbroken to even look at anything MFA related until now. I knew it was a long shot, but I got rejected from the two schools I didn't care much about and, finally, my first choice, which I was really excited about. I think, if I do reapply, I may switch from CNF to poetry. And maybe take the GREs. That will open up so many more options. I only applied three places this go around, but it was still really disappointing, mostly to get rejected from U of A after visiting and falling in love. So it goes.

Aaaand hyper-ventilation.

Michener was my first choice (I only applied to two schools).

I'm sorry to stop creeping to finally register only to ask a slew of questions but how did you hear back from them? I didn't receive an e-mail or anything.

I've been scouring the internet for a week now and haven't seen any news of people being admitted; do they always notify the rejected before the admitted?

Thanks, cigarettes--and no worries, I've never been partial to shooting the messenger (although the milkman is getting a firm and sudden backhand, believe you me).

You don't even get a polite mass-e-mail? You have to go check yourself?

I know that the poetry phone calls went out the 13th to Michener. I'm guessing fiction admits were notified then as well. So, that's that. yeah, that definitely sucks. Oh well.

I have a midterm tomorrow so the fetal position needs to wait. SO, I'm not going to check manually and make it official just yet.

Alas, me too -- you're not alone! One of my recommenders, who seems to know about these things, said it may not be indicative of my (or your) chances elsewhere, because Michener considers applicants who are already doing graduate work at UT -- i.e., people they know well, "whom they both hold to be exceptional AND know directly to be deserving of that kind of (further) support." Let's keep our fingers crossed, then.

I'm assuming I've been rejected from University of Michigan, as according to Seth Abramson's site, acceptances went out via email earlier this week. Feeling a bit dejected.... :(

Michener found me similarly repellent (as of 2/14).

As did Brown and Cornell (as of 2/25).

Got wait listed at UIUC, though, which is my top school. Can't say that I'm holding my breath considering that there's probably plenty of people on the wait list and surely there are 3 people ahead of me sane enough to accept the school's invitation.

Still waiting to hear from Syracuse, USC, UC Irvine, New School, NYU, and Penn State. :-/

Anybody hear anything else, yet?

Sadly, I have similarly been found resistible, and been rejected, by Univ. Illinois U-C (so sadly, though they sent a nice letter), Univ. Wisconsin - Madison, and the Iowa's Writers' Workshop. Still hoping to hear otherwise from any or all of the following: Colorado State Univ., Purdue, Virginia Tech. (poetry)
