HarperCollins Offers Free Online Editions of Books

HarperCollins recently began posting free online editions of some of its forthcoming titles. Among the books available for view on the HarperCollins Web site are the novels The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver and The Witch of Portobello by Paulo Coelho. The "full access" program expands upon the publisher's existing "Browse Inside" option, which allows customers to look through a few pages of select titles prior to purchase.

Researcher Finds First Recording of Ginsberg's "Howl"

A researcher in Portland, Oregon, recently discovered the first recording of Allen Ginsberg reading his famous poem "Howl," the Oregonian reported last week. While researching a biography of poet Gary Snyder at Reed College in Portland, John Suiter found the thirty-five-minute reel-to-reel tape in a box marked "Snyder Ginsberg 1956."

John Sterling Steps Down as President of Holt

John Sterling is stepping down as president and publisher of Henry Holt after nine years in the position, and will become executive vice president and editor-at-large at Macmillan, Holt's parent company. Sterling leaves the helm after a record-breaking year for Holt in terms of sales, profits, and bestsellers.

Poet Tom Sleigh Walks Away With $100,000

Claremont Graduate University announced yesterday that Tom Sleigh won the 2008 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award for his collection Space Walk (Houghton Mifflin, 2007). He received $100,000. The award, sponsored by Claremont Graduate University in Claremont, California, is given to a midcareer poet "who is past the very beginning, but has not yet reached the acknowledged pinnacle of his or her career." Sleigh is the author of seven books of poetry. He teaches at Hunter College and lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Coen Brothers to Direct Film Version of Chabon Novel

Joel and Ethan Coen will adapt and direct a film version of Pulitzer Prize–winner Michael Chabon’s novel The Yiddish Policemen’s Union (HarperCollins, 2007), the Guardian reported. Scott Rudin, who is also developing a screen version of Chabon’s novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (Random House, 2000), will produce the picture along with the brothers. In 2000, Rudin produced Chabon’s Wonder Boys (Villard, 1995).

Obama Beats Clinton (Wins Grammy Award)

Barack Obama prevailed last night over two former presidents—Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter—to win a 2008 Grammy Award for the spoken-word recording of his book The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream (Random House Audio, 2006). Obama received his first Grammy in 2005 for the audio recording of Dreams From My Father (Random House Audio, 2005).
