Six Emerging Women Writers Receive $25,000 Awards

The Rona Jaffe Foundation announced on Wednesday the recipients of their fourteenth annual Writers' Awards, given to recognize emerging women writers "who demonstrate excellence and promise." The winners, nominated by literary professionals and selected by an anonymous panel of established writers, will each receive $25,000 at the awards ceremony, held on September 18 in New York City.

D.C. Book Festival Spotlights African American Authors

From September 25 through 27, the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Foundation, a nonprofit organization serving African American writers, will host Author Pavilion, a three-day book festival held in the nation's capital in celebration of African American literature and scholarship. The program features opportunities to meet with writers as well as performances of poetry and panel discussions.

Melbourne Named City of Literature

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recently named Melbourne, Australia, a City of Literature, three days before the start of the Melbourne Writers Festival. The honor, given for the first time in 2004 to Edinburgh, Scotland, recognizes Melbourne’s thriving literary and publishing communities.
