The 19th annual Postgraduate Writers’ Conference was held from August 11 to August 17 on the Vermont College of Fine Arts campus in Montpelier. The conference, designed for writers with graduate degrees or equivalent experience, offered workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as readings, craft classes, and individual consultations with faculty members. Each workshop was limited to five or six participants. The faculty included poets Michael Dickman, Kathleen Graber, Patricia Smith, David Wojahn, and Kevin Young; fiction writers Steve Almond, Carol Anshaw, Andre Dubus III, Ellen Lesser, and Lee Martin; and creative nonfiction writers Rigoberto González, Sue William Silverman, Anthony Swofford, and Joan Wickersham. Tuition was $915 for all workshops except for the poetry manuscript workshop, which was $1045. The cost for on-campus housing was $330 for a single room, or $180 for a shared room. The full conference meal plan was $185. A nonrefundable deposit of $200 was due upon registration. Scholarships were available; writers submitted a five-page writing sample and a letter explaining need. Applications were accepted on a rolling basis.
