Approximately 70 percent of students are funded by the department each year through Teaching Assistantships, Chancellor’s Fellowships, and Arts and Sciences Council Diversity Fellowships. Other funding opportunities include positions as reading series organizers and office assistants.

This program has an experimental focus and has a foreign language requirement. All students teach creative writing. Publishing workshops and nonfiction courses are available, though there is no degree focus for nonfiction. Students may also attend the semiannual Small Press Festival.
