The 2014 Surprise Valley Writers’ Conference will be held from September 11 to September 14 in the high desert of Cedarville, California. The conference, which this year celebrates the 75th anniversary of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath, features workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as readings and lectures. The faculty includes poets Julia Connor and Judy Halebsky, fiction writer Christopher Coake, and nonfiction writer Susan Shillinglaw. Tuition is $475, which includes some meals. Lodging, which ranges from $60 to $145 per night, is available at area hotels and inns. Submit three to five poems or a work of prose of up to 5,000 words by August 1.
