Poetry Forum Workshop Led By CM Burroughs

Event Type: Poetry Workshop
Event Date and Time:
1:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Description: COME TRY YOUR NEW WORK ON US! The RHINO Poetry Forum Workshop & Peer Exchange is more than a hammer-and-nail workshop. In existence since the 1970s, its goal has always been to present diverse views on poetry and poetics, as well as to exchange poems for critiquing, in which everyone, including RHINO Poetry editors and past leaders, participate as peers. All poets are invited. Topic: Writing the Body: What is body memory? How do writers articulate memory that is felt more than it is intellectualized? We will study poems that focus on the body as a primary site of experience and discuss practical applications of writing this intimate yet opaque place. CM Burroughs serves as Assistant Professor of Poetry at Columbia College Chicago. Burroughs has been awarded fellowships and grants from Yaddo, The MacDowell Colony, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, Cave Canem Foundation, Callaloo Writers Workshop and the University of Pittsburgh. She has received commissions from the Studio Museum of Harlem and the Warhol Museum to create poetry in response to art installations. A Pushcart Prize nominee and a finalist for the 2009 Gift of Freedom Award, her poetry has appeared in journals including Callaloo, jubilat, Ploughshares, VOLT, Bat City Review, and Volta. Burroughs is a graduate of Sweet Briar College and the MFA program at the University of Pittsburgh. Her debut collection of poetry is The Vital System from Tupelo Press, and she is Senior Editor for Tupelo Quarterly and Co-Editor for Court Green. http://rhinopoetry.org/2014/07/02/poetry-forum-workshop-led-by-cm-burroughs-7-27-14/
