The 13th annual Muse and the Marketplace Conference was held from May 2 to May 4 at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston. The conference, designed for fiction and creative nonfiction writers, featured craft classes, panel discussions, and meetings with agents and editors. Participants included fiction writers Maud Casey, Alexander Chee, Stacey D’Erasmo, Roxane Gay, Rigoberto González, Pam Houston, and Jamie Quatro; nonfiction writers Augusten Burroughs and Dan Jones; agents Lisa Bankoff, Regina Brooks, Gail Hochman, Jeff Kleinman, and Emma Sweeney; and editors Millicent Bennett, Dan Smetanka, and Hannah Tinti. The keynote speakers were Walter Mosley and Jane Friedman. The cost of the conference was $310 to $490. For a one-on-one manuscript consultation with an agent or editor, applicants submitted up to 20 pages of prose with a $145 registration fee by April 7. The general registration deadline was April 28.
