Marketing Writer

The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is an independent, nonprofit international organization devoted to the advancement of interdisciplinary research in the social sciences through a wide variety of workshops and conferences, fellowships and grants, summer training institutes, scholarly exchanges, research, and publications. The SSRC invites applications for the position of Marketing Writer. The Marketing Writer will work closely with the Managing Editor and SSRC program directors to realize communications and editorial projects, which may include but will not be limited to brochures, conference proceedings, press releases, print and digital publications, web features, and program webpages/sites. S/he will oversee any or all aspects of production, such as budget planning, establishing and managing contracts and contacts with different vendors (printers, distributors, fulfillment services, designers, publicists, etc.), developing and overseeing adherence to production schedules, content development, copyediting, fact-checking, proofing, and ensuring all copy reflects the Council’s style and voice. In some cases, responsibilities may extend to original writing, commissioning texts, liaison with authors, and developmental editing.

Duties: 

  • • Transform social science/academic work into products accessible by a wide range of audiences, such as policy briefs, reports, sound bites, etc.
  • • Develop and maintain products that present and brand the Council, such as brochures, annual or president’s reports, program reports, one-pagers, templates, business systems, etc.
  • • Develop media messages and images to persuade the public and policymakers to take an interest in the work of the Council.
  • • Develop advertising and other programs to educate and engage the public.
  • • Proactively engage program directors to determine their program’s outreach needs and update their program materials, webpages/sites, and social media platforms.
  • • Develop and maintain materials specific to particular development efforts, including for visiting committees, donors, and foundations.
  • • Interact with program staff to gather academic judgment and subject matter expertise when needed.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position will have training and/or professional experience in the social sciences (experience in the humanities may be considered) and a minimum of four years of successful editorial and/or marketing experience, including budget and project management. Relevant experience in an academic, foundation, or not-for-profit environment will be a strong asset. The successful candidate will be a solid writer and analyst with well-honed interpersonal communications and teamwork abilities and the energy, enthusiasm, and organizational skills to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously. Ability to self-manage scheduled projects while also handling short-lead assignments in response to urgent priorities is important. Knowledge of digital publication and media is a plus; experience in publicity and/or development is optimal.
