Three prizes are given annually to writers between 20 and 35 years of age for works-in-progress. The $3,000 James D. Phelan Award is given for a work of poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction by a native of California. The $2,000 Joseph Henry Jackson Award is given for a work of poetry, fiction, or creative nonfiction. The $2,000 Mary Tanenbaum Award is given for a work of creative nonfiction. Applicants must be residents of northern California or Nevada for at least three consecutive years prior to the deadline. For all awards, which are sponsored by the San Francisco Foundation and administered by Intersection for the Arts, submit manuscripts of up to 40 pages by March 31. There is no entry fee.
