Each issue of The Ledge is perfect-bound with a full-color cover and features a wide and eclectic range of works by poets and writers of all backgrounds and persuasions. We firmly believe that superior work appeals to a wider audience than most literary journals endeavor to reach, and consider The Ledge Poetry & Fiction Magazine a truly democratic publication in that regard. The Ledge also sponsors annual poetry and fiction awards competitions and an annual poetry chapbook competition.
Founded in 1988 by its editor-in-chief and publisher Timothy Monaghan, The Ledge seeks compelling stories that employ dramatic tension and complex characterization. We especially enjoy poignant stories with a sense of purpose and dislike careless or contrived writing. We seek passionate poems that utilize language and imagery in a fresh, original fashion and favor visceral poems that speak to the human experience. We appreciate inspired, imaginative, well-crafted verse, and we are open to all styles and schools of writing, including formal poems.
