Description: For many years, PEN Center USA has successfully fought back against attempts to ban books from libraries and classrooms. In addition, we have joined campaigns against censorship spearheaded by the American Library Association. As part of our stand against censorship, PEN Center USA is proud to present Forbidden Fruit, an annual showcase of banned literature and a celebration of literary expression and freedom. Participants, made up of notable actors and writers, read from works of literature that have, at various times, been challenged. Each of the selections comes from the American Library Association's list of challenged and banned books. Past Forbidden Fruit readers have included Jamie Lee Curtis, Gore Vidal, Jason Alexander, Julian Sands, Illeana Douglas, and Kevin McKidd, among others.
