Festival Promotes French, American Literary Exchange

French and American poets, writers, and editors will meet at the Festival of Literary Magazines in New York City to discuss translation, tradition, funding, and cross-cultural and cross-genre influences on their publication practices. The three-day festival, beginning October 4, will examine the history of the Franco-American dialogue through literary magazines in the larger context of contemporary art, politics, and culture.

Festival events, which include a keynote address by Michel Deguy and Rosmarie Waldrop, panel discussions, and readings, will be held at the New York Public Library's Humanities and Social Sciences Library, the Bowery Poetry Club, the City University of New York Graduate Center, and Poets House.

American participants include Guy Bennett, Dodie Bellamy and Kevin Killian from Mirage, Mary Ann Caws, Norma Cole, Caroline Crumpacker and Frances Richard from Fence, Stacy Doris, Marcella Durand, Clayton Eshleman of Sulfur, Ed Foster from Talisman, Serge Gavronsky, Peter Gizzi, Laird Hunt, Pierre Joris, Brendan Lorber of LUNGFULL!, Andrew Maxwell and Macgregor Card from The Germ, Jena Osman and Juliana Spahr from Chain, Stephen Sartarelli, Jerrold Shiroma of Duration, Eleni Sikelianos, Giovanni Singleton of Nocturnes, Cole Swensen, Paul Vangelisti, Anne Waldman, and Andrew Zawacki of Verse.

French representatives include Philippe Castellin from Dock(s), Henri Deluy from Action Poétique, Jean-Michel Espitallier from Java, Jean-Pierre Faye, Eric Giraud of Issue, Liliane Giraudon of If, Jean-Michel Maulpoix of Le Nouveau Recueil, Beatrice Mousli, and Omar Berrada and Vincent Broqua of Double Change.
