I have always believed that writing is a noble calling and with that calling comes a responsibility. Albert Camus said that the purpose of a writer is to keep civilization from destroying itself. That sounds like a responsibility to me, so on my part as a writer I consider it my responsibility to do what I can to reverse the decline.

I was shocked at the notion that writers are no longer aware of audience. But I am not shocked at the decline in reading when, for the last decade, reading for interest and fun has been subordinate to sounding out words and analyzing disconnected paragraphs on multiple choice tests. Our youth have to learn the joy in reading, not just the drugery of an assignment. No wonder they turn to other amusements.
