Borders Announces 2008 Original Voices Nominees

Borders recently announced that nominees for the 2008 Original Voices Awards. The annual prizes recognize "fresh, compelling, and ambitious works from the new and emerging talents" published in the past year. Winners in the categories of fiction, nonfiction, young adult, and children's picture books each receive five thousand dollars and prominent placement of their books in the more than five hundred Borders stores across the country. 

The nominees in fiction, chosen by both corporate and store employees of Borders, are Dear American Airlines (Houghton Mifflin) by Jonathan Miles, The Cellist of Sarajevo (Riverhead) by Steven Galloway, The Good Thief (Dial Press) by Hannah Tinti, The Lace Reader (William Morrow) by Brunonia Barry, The Somnambulist (William Morrow) by Jonathan Barnes, and The White Tiger (Free Press) by Aravind Adiga.

The winners will be announced in January. Last year's winner in fiction was Steven Hall for his debut novel, The Raw Shark Texts (Canongate).
