The 14th annual Bear River Writers’ Conference, sponsored by the University of Michigan, was held from May 29 to June 2 at Camp Michigania on Walloon Lake, near Petoskey, Michigan. The conference offered workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as readings, discussions, nature walks, and time for writing. The faculty included poets Michael Dickman, Linda Gregerson, and Thomas Lynch; fiction writers V. V. Ganeshananthan, Thisbe Nissen, Valerie Laken, and Richard Russo; and creative nonfiction writers Jerry Dennis and Richard Tillinghast. Tuition, including all meals, was $605, and housing ranged from $90 to $110 for the week. A $100 deposit was required to secure enrollment; the balance was due by May 15. Scholarships were available.
