The 2016 Bear River Writers’ Conference, sponsored by the University of Michigan, was held from June 2 to June 6 at Camp Michigania on Walloon Lake, near Petoskey, Michigan. The conference featured workshops in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction, as well as readings, discussions, nature walks, and time to write. The faculty included poets Tarfia Faizullah, Linda Gregerson, Laura Kasischke, and Richard Tillinghast; fiction writers Bonnie Jo Campbell, Lolita Hernandez, and Antonya Nelson; and creative nonfiction writers Margaret Lazarus Dean, Jerry Dennis, and Thomas Lynch. Tuition, including all meals, was $625, and lodging was available at the camp in shared and private cabins from $90 to $250. A $100 deposit was required to secure enrollment; the balance was due by April 29. Full and partial scholarships were available; writers submitted a brief personal statement and up to 8 pages of poetry or 10 pages of prose by March 14.
