Sterling Publishing, a subsidiary of the Barnes & Noble bookstore chain, recently announced the launch of an imprint devoted exclusively to narrative nonfiction. Beginning next fall, Union Square Press will annually publish thirty to forty books in the categories of biography and current affairs, as well as reprints of out-of-print titles. Philip Turner, who is currently vice president of Avalon Publishing Group and editor in chief of that company’s nonfiction imprints Carroll & Graf and Thunder’s Mouth Press, will join Sterling as editorial director starting January 15, 2007.

Founded in 1949 and acquired by Barnes & Noble in 2002, Sterling publishes reference works, illustrated and “how-to” books, and a line of literary classics. It currently has a backlist of more than five thousand nonfiction titles.
