Author's Bio

Alpay Ulku's first book of poem's is Meteorology (BOA Editions; foreword by Yusef Komunyakaa), which was selected as an "Notable Debut" by the Academy of American Poets book club. Alpay received an MFA from the University of Iowa's Writer's Workshop and a BA from the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies at the University of Redlands. Alpay works as a technical writer and business analyst in Chicago, where he lives with his wife, the writer and organization superhero, Anne-Marie Gallagher, and their two boys, Snapdragon and Lickedy-split. Alpay has received grants from the Illinois Arts Council, the Fine Arts Work Center in Provicetown, the Iowa Arts Council, the Edna St.Vincent Millay Colony, and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation. Alpay's poem, "Three Rivers," was selected by Slate.com senior editor Michael Agger for inclusion in its Best Valentine’s Day poems feature in February 2011, and his poem "The Stiller of Atoms," was selected by The Penn Center for the Book's Public Poetry Project in 2012. The project will create a poster of "The Stiller of Atoms" and distribute 1,500 copies free to schools, libraries, cultural centers, and cafes throughout Pennsylvania.
