After a tomboy upbringing on the East Coast, then a decade teaching English, coaching basketball, and making high schools safer for LGBTQ-youth on the West Coast, I moved to the Ohio, where I currently teach writing at Oberlin College. I enjoy sharing my enthusiasm and teaching energy and am available every January for Writer Residencies in high schools, colleges, or community centers--especially in regions that have warmer winters than northeast Ohio! I have plenty of experience and fun teaching creative writing, journalism, and composition. In addition to my publications, my writing background includes: two "people's choice" Cable Car Awards for "Best Columnist" (San Francisco); two Lambda Literary Award nominations for Poetry; and multiple songwriting credits with the Backbone (my favorite side project as a bass player) on the album WHO WE WANT TO BE, which is available at CDBaby.com.
I'm a Cleveland-based author who has sponsored and/or participated in readings throughout Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Quebec and California. I consider the focus of my work to be short stories and flash fiction, having appeared in multiple journals online and in print. I run a blog and small chapbook press (Burning River) and recently completed a writing residency in Val-David, Quebec. I also sometimes review, the latest being in Gloom Cupboard, Prick of the Spindle, among others.
